Roughly 3,600 years ago, the volcanic eruption of the caldera not only created the lagoon that allows modern-day Santorini to be a coveted cruise port, but it also literally froze the Minoan city of Akrotiri in time. The area’s volcanic activity has also helped to form the beaches. Red Beach features not only impressive rock formations but also a colorful layer of red sand that is unique to this location. Black Beach is known for its awe-inspiring black pebble formations, formed by centuries of accumulation of volcanic rock.
